Compared: Syft and Spotlight Reporting

Syft vs Spotlight Reporting, compared honestly

Both are advisory platforms with reporting, forecasting and consolidation, connected live to the ledger. Syft leans to interactive analytics, data beyond the ledger such as Shopify, Stripe and Square, and very broad currency support; Spotlight to structured modules for reporting, forecasting and dashboards, with franchise benchmarking and ESG beside them. Magic MIS, a different kind of tool, wrote this page.

Where Syft is stronger, and where Spotlight is

Syft is stronger with data beyond the ledger (Shopify, Stripe and Square beside Xero matter for online retail clients), with Sage among its ledgers, with currency breadth and ownership features when consolidating, and in exploring the numbers interactively, with anomaly detection.

Spotlight is stronger where forecasting is a service of its own, with best and worst cases; in franchise and network benchmarking through its Multi module; in industry templates and white-labelled packs; and for a firm that wants ESG reporting too.

How to choose between them

  1. List your clients' data. Heavy Shopify, Stripe or Square clients, or Sage ledgers, point to Syft.
  2. Decide what you sell. Interactive advisory sessions suit Syft; packaged reporting and forecasting engagements suit Spotlight's modules.
  3. Look at your groups. Complex ownership and many currencies favour Syft; franchises and networks favour Spotlight.
  4. Trial both on one client and one month, time month two as well as month one, and trace three figures to their ledgers in each.

When neither is what you need

Both are live-connected subscriptions. When clients are on systems neither connects to, when the deliverable is the same monthly pack every month, or when a per-organisation subscription doesn't fit your client list, Magic MIS builds the pack from the trial balance you already export: a checked Excel workbook, a board you change by chatting and the month written up, with the AI writing words and never numbers, on prepaid credits. It doesn't forecast in depth, consolidate groups or support teams; if you need those, the tools above are the better fit. More: Syft alternative, Spotlight Reporting alternative.

Where the information came from

Read on 29 October 2026: Syft from its Xero App Store listing, because its own site returned only page metadata to our reader; Spotlight from spotlightreporting.com, /product/reporting, /product/forecasting, /product/multi, /product/ai and /pricing. Check both before deciding. Syft and Spotlight Reporting are trademarks of their owners. Magic MIS is not affiliated with or endorsed by either.
