Compared: Spotlight Reporting
A Spotlight Reporting alternative for monthly management accounts, paid per report
If your firm runs advisory work on Xero or QuickBooks clients and needs live sync, three-way forecasts, consolidation or ESG reporting, Spotlight Reporting is the stronger tool. If what you produce each month is management accounts for clients on many systems, paid per report, Magic MIS is built for that. Magic MIS wrote this page.

What Spotlight Reporting does well
From its own site:
- Reporting, Forecasting and Dashboard modules: management reporting with visual analysis, and a one-page KPI dashboard with financial and non-financial measures.
- Forecasting: cash flow forecasts, budgets, what-if scenarios and three-way forecasts with best and worst cases, feeding straight into reporting.
- Consolidation and Multi: group reporting and forecasting, and benchmarking across franchises and networks.
- Live connections to Xero and QuickBooks.
- AI over calculated figures: suggestions and executive summaries layered on figures calculated first.
- Industry templates and white-labelled reports, and ESG reporting through a sister product.
If any of those is why you chose Spotlight, keep it.

When Spotlight is the better choice, and when Magic MIS is
Spotlight fits when your clients are mostly on Xero or QuickBooks and you want numbers to refresh with no upload; when forecasting is the service; when you report on groups or franchises; when several people work in the same client files; or when you want ESG reporting too.
Magic MIS fits when your clients are on many systems, some only ever sending an Excel trial balance; when your client list moves every month and a per-organisation subscription keeps charging for paused clients; when the deliverable is the same monthly pack, written up; when every number must be defended in the meeting; and when you want to keep a checked Excel workbook of your own.
Magic MIS's AI drafts commentary as sentences with blanks, and the calculation engine fills each blank from the ledgers; a draft containing a figure of its own is rejected. Where to act gives suggestions to consider, not tax, legal or audit advice. You needn't switch: nothing stops you keeping a forecasting tool for advisory clients and using Magic MIS for the monthly packs of clients on other systems.

What firms comparing them ask
Is Magic MIS a full replacement for Spotlight Reporting?
No. It doesn't do three-way forecasting, scenarios, consolidation, multi-user teams or ESG. It replaces the monthly management accounts part of the job.
Does Magic MIS connect to Xero or QuickBooks?
There is no live connection. You upload the trial balance you export from them, or from any other system, and each month the new one refreshes the pack.
Can I show the pack to a client's board?
Yes. Present shows the board full screen with the client's logo, and a read-only copy can be shared by link.
Who can see my client's file?
Each file is encrypted under a key belonging to that company alone. No person on our side can open it, every opening is recorded where you can see it, and deleting the company destroys its key.
How do I try it on one client?
Create an account, upload last month's trial balance for one client and compare the pack with yours. Prepaid credit packs with no subscription; each action shows its standard price before it runs.
