Compared: Fathom and Spotlight Reporting

Fathom vs Spotlight Reporting, compared honestly

Both are established advisory platforms connected live to Xero and QuickBooks, with management reporting, three-way forecasting and consolidation. Fathom leans to structured reporting with a large KPI library, benchmarking and a high entity limit; Spotlight to separate modules for reporting, forecasting and dashboards, with franchise benchmarking and ESG beside them. Magic MIS, a different kind of tool, wrote this page.

Where Fathom is stronger, and where Spotlight is

Fathom is stronger in the breadth of its KPI library and formula builder, in a report editor built for the monthly pack, in the number of entities it consolidates, and in connecting MYOB and Google Sheets as well as Xero and QuickBooks.

Spotlight is stronger where forecasting is sold as its own service, with best and worst cases beside the base; in benchmarking franchises and networks through its Multi module; and where a firm also wants ESG reporting from the same family of products.

How to choose between them

  1. List your clients' systems. MYOB or Google Sheets clients point to Fathom; a book entirely on Xero and QuickBooks works with either.
  2. Decide what you sell. A monthly report with KPIs suits Fathom's structure; forecasting as a separate engagement suits Spotlight's modules.
  3. Look at your groups and networks. Large groups favour Fathom's entity limit; franchises and networks favour Spotlight's benchmarking.
  4. Trial both on one client and one month, and time month two as well as month one; the tool that wins on the second month and on tracing figures to their ledgers usually wins over a year.

When neither is what you need

Both are live-connected subscriptions. They may be more than you need when clients are on systems neither connects to, when the deliverable is simply the monthly management accounts, or when a per-organisation subscription doesn't fit a client list that changes every month.

That is the gap Magic MIS fills: upload the trial balance you already export, from any system, and get a checked Excel workbook, a board you change by chatting and the month written up, with the AI writing words and never numbers, on prepaid credits. It doesn't forecast in depth, consolidate groups or support teams; if you need those, the tools above are the better fit. More: Fathom alternative, Spotlight Reporting alternative.
