Compared: Fathom and Syft

Fathom vs Syft, compared honestly

Both are mature reporting, forecasting and consolidation tools connected live to Xero and other ledgers. Fathom leans to structured management reporting with a large KPI library and three-way forecasting; Syft to interactive analytics with broad currency support and sources such as Shopify and Stripe. Magic MIS, a different kind of tool, wrote this page.

Where Fathom is stronger, and where Syft is

Fathom is stronger in structured monthly reporting (a large KPI library, a formula builder, variance reporting and an editor built for monthly packs), in forecasting depth, and in benchmarking across a client base.

Syft is stronger with data beyond the ledger (Square, Shopify and Stripe beside Xero, which matters for ecommerce and retail clients), in currency breadth and ownership features when consolidating, and in interactive analytics and anomaly detection for exploring the numbers rather than producing a fixed pack.

How to choose between them

  1. List your clients' systems and data. Heavy Shopify or Stripe? Look hard at Syft. Mostly Xero, QuickBooks or MYOB with standard accounts? Either works.
  2. Decide what you sell. A monthly management report with KPIs and forecasts fits Fathom's structure; interactive advisory sessions fit Syft's exploration.
  3. Count your groups, and compare each one's entity limits and ownership handling against your clients.
  4. Trial both on the same client and month, and answer five questions: how long the first report took; how long month two takes; whether a director outside finance can read it; whether you can trace three random figures to their ledgers; and what it costs across your whole client list, quiet and paused clients included.

The tool that wins on month two and on tracing figures usually wins over a year.

When neither is what you need

Both are live-connected subscription platforms. They may be more than you need when clients are on systems neither connects to (desktop Sage, Tally, DATEV, or an Excel trial balance); when the deliverable is simply the monthly management accounts, the same each month; or when a per-company subscription doesn't fit a client list that changes every month.

That is the gap Magic MIS fills: upload the trial balance you already export, and get a checked Excel workbook, a board you change by chatting, and the month written up, with the AI writing words and never numbers. It doesn't forecast in depth, consolidate or support teams; if you need those, choose Fathom or Syft. More: Fathom alternative, Syft alternative.

Where the information came from

Read on 29 October 2026: Fathom from fathomhq.com/features and fathomhq.com/pricing; Syft from its Xero App Store listing, because its own site returned only page metadata to our reader. Products change; check both before deciding. Fathom and Syft are trademarks of their owners. Magic MIS is not affiliated with or endorsed by either.

What firms choosing between them ask

Is Fathom or Syft better for Xero?

Both connect live to Xero. Syft's listing describes syncing accounts, journals, invoices, contacts, bank transactions and tracking categories; Fathom lists Xero beside QuickBooks and MYOB. Trial both on one client.

Which is better for consolidation?

Both consolidate with eliminations. Fathom states up to 300 entities and 95+ currencies; Syft states 170+ currencies with acquisitions, disposals and fractional ownership. The right one depends on your groups.

Which has AI commentary?

Fathom describes an AI commentary writer; Syft describes AI insights and anomaly detection. Whichever you use, check every figure in AI-written text against the report.

Can I test them before paying?

Yes. Both advertise trial periods on their sites.
